Outreach: Transforming The World Through Mission and Service

Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly. Yet many in his world and our world lack those things they need for abundant life. We respond to the needs of the world by seeking to live a life of love for our neighbor. Our mission is especially focused on children, hunger, and healing, and we encourage all who are part of our community to use their gifts to help transform the lives of others.

Food Pantry, and Christmas Toys For Children

St Nicholas offers an evening food pantry twice a month on the first and third Wednesday, to fit the schedules of working people who can’t take time off to visit other area food pantries.

At Christmas time, we collect unwrapped toys to benefit a local immigrant services charity that has a children’s program. Click here to see how you might be able to help by volunteering or donating non-perishable food items and personal hygiene and cleaning supplies. Healing Ministry: The Order of St Luke

TheOrderOfStLuke

The Order of St Luke is very active at St Nicholas! We offer a healing ministry on the third Sunday of the month, and will soon be offering a Eucharist with Healing at Asbury Park retirement community. There is no expectation of miraculous cures, just the warm and caring touch of a friend who asks quietly what sort of healing is needed, and offers to pray with you and offer their understanding and support. For more information, contact Jennifer Brundidge.

Little Boots Rodeo

LittleBootsRodeo150

Each year St Nicholas participates in Little Boots Rodeo, a fun family event that is a little bit like a Wild West rodeo, and a lot of fun. Children compete for prizes and play games, and the proceeds benefit local charitable organizations such as the Elk Grove Village Farmers’ Market, District 59 Education, and our own Second Family Food Pantry. It’s held each year in June, and we always are looking for volunteers to staff our games booth.

AA/GA Support Groups

St Nicholas is proud to host AA and GA support groups. Click here for more information, and check the calendar for the current schedule. There are daily meetings of AA, while GA and Al-Anon meet on a weekly basis.

P.A.D.S. at Christus Victor Lutheran Church

GivingHeart

“Providing Advocacy, Dignity and Shelter,” more commonly known as P.A.D.S.serves the area’s poor and homeless with safe and clean overnight shelter; not only that, P.A.D.S. also provides fun and filling meals. The shelter at Christus Victor is open from October 1 until April 30 each year, and there is a shelter open every night of the week at one of the particpating churches. Many services are offered – laundry facilities, showers, hair cuts, and more. We of St Nicholas have begun to work with Christus Victor to provide and serve a meal for our guests, and we hope to make it an ongoing commitment.

Elk Grove Village Parade

St Nicholas participates in the annual Elk Grove Village Parade; in 2013, the year of our 50th Anniversary celebrations, we got very ambitious and entered a float.

ElkGroveParadeFloatFishers

Actually, it really WAS a boat; the theme that year was recreation and sports, so our non-floating float was titled “Fishers of Men,” with passengers in the boat and walking alongside wearing our blue “Follow Me To St Nicholas” shirts. Construction paper waves and real fishing poles completed the effect. The next year, it was a circus theme, so evidently the parade organizers were on to us. Join in the fun next year with us, designing and executing a float that adheres to the theme, yet expresses who we are as the Community of St Nicholas.
